♥ My Week That Was

Paper Protest:  Are you, like me, flabbergasted, fascinated and gaga with disbelief, as you watch the unfolding narrative of the dark games News International played, with other people’s lives and journalistic standards?  I normally buy the Sunday Times, but this and last Sunday, as a protest against the sordid shenanigans, I haven’t done so, I don’t expect my puny protest will make jot a of difference, but at the moment it just seems so wrong to buy a paper from the News International stable.  The chattering classes are suggesting a film of the sorry story will be made some time in the future.  As Rupert Murdoch struggles to save his embattled empire and other media outlets shine a spotlight,on the players who strut across News International’s and its parent company News Corporation’s stage,  perhaps ‘Karma Strikes Back’ might be as good title as any for said film.

♥ Fashion and Poetry

Aeons ago, when I was in my last school year, studying for my Leaving Certificate (final school exam in the Irish educational system), I first came across Emily Dickinson’s poems, as a couple of them were on the English syllabus.  Back then I would have struggled to explain the potent tug of her words and why they left a mark on my soul; in fact I doubt if I could explain it fully today.

♥ Bastille Day Madeleines

Tomorrow, Bastille Day is the French national holiday; it commemorates the storming of the infamous Bastille prison on 14th July 1789 by disgruntled revolutionaries. The rebels took the Bastille and that event became a symbol of The French Revolution. Tomorrow all of France will be en fête; I decided to celebrate from afar by baking some madeleines.

♥ Straw Basket

It’s been sunny (well what passes for sunny in the  changeable  Irish climate) here today but it was more in hope that the fine weather might continue, than expectation that it would, that I changed over from the tote I had been using to my most summer-sun suitable bag.  It’s actually a straw basket bought in Tuscany a few years ago, I have a vague memory that it cost around twelve euros, there were three sizes to choose from and I opted for middle one, in retrospect I wish I had also bought the teeny tiny cute one and the very useful (for shopping) large one.

♥ Favourite Shops//Bow

If I were a tourist in a foreign city Bow is exactly the sort of shop I would like to stumble upon; Dublin is fortunate to have this unique addition to the city’s retail landscape.  Bow is co-owned by three talented people, Ellis Boyle (creator of ethereally pretty clothes), Margaret O’Rourke (jewellery designer and founder of her own label MoMuse) and Wendy Crawford (finder of vintage treasures).  The mix in the shop is thus clothes, jewellery and vintage items.

♥ Thread

Thread is a new free fashion magazine for Dublin that will be published quarterly.  It’s the very clever idea of the owners of six independent Dublin boutiques (Bow, Costume, Dolls, Indigo & Cloth, Smock and uCCa) who banded together to showcase their stock (often original and sometimes quirky) and to shine a light on Dublin’s vibrant creative fashion scene.

♥ Giveaway – Hermès Knotting Cards

Yesterday when I wrote about the art of scarf tying I mentioned some sources to check out to help improve and perfect scarforial-knotting skills.  Another great resource is a pack of Hermès Knotting Cards.  I have one  to give away; there are about twenty cards in the pack, each showing a different way of tying a scarf.  To win, simply leave a comment on Just Add Attitude, the comment must mention the word scarf.  The giveaway closes ten days from now on the 16th July.  I will number all your comments pop them into a hat and pull the winning one out on the 17th July.

♥ Scarforial Art

Christine Legarde (previously the French finance minister and now the new head of the IMF) was ranked forty-third on the Forbes 2010 list of ‘The World’s most Powerful Women’.  Despite her high-powered international career, it was interesting to see that in a recent FT article (admittedly not specifically about her, or her new job) one of the first things that the journalist honed in on, when describing Christine Lagarde giving a speech, was that ‘she was wearing a scarf tied in a perfect geometric circle’.

♥ Slices of my week

In last Sunday’s post, see here, I mentioned jewellery-making classes I went to many years ago.  I made quite a few things including the bracelet and flower necklace in the picture; because they were on my mind, I have worn the pieces a lot this week.  They are many degrees short of perfection but are still wearable.  Of all the courses I have attended, jewellery-making one that I found easiest to master; at the end of the first evening I came home with a very simple silver cross that I had made.  The process was straightforward, I sawed out the cross shape, I then filed the edges smooth and it was finished when the teacher soldered on a ring, to thread a chain through.  So if you are looking for a spare time creative outlet maybe jewellery making might be for you.
