This week Barack Obama was re-elected president of the USA. JAA doesn’t normally drift into political waters so I will just briefly say I was pleased and relieved that he will serve for a second term. Michelle Obama is highly intelligent, extraordinarily articulate, and blessed with a preternatural ability to connect with people; for those reasons it seems a bit shallow to obsess about what she wears. But I do: she is one of my style icons.

I am of the ‘I need eight hours shuteye a night’ tribe. I am awestruck when I read about folk who regularly survive on four hours sleep or less, betwixt dusk and dawn and still manage to fully function as entirely sane human beings. How do they do it?

I have a reasonably optimistic nature. My glass is usually half full. One of the side effects of this optimism is that I tend to think ‘ I could do that’. Make a dress, paint a picture, fashion a piece of jewellery – no problem. I have in the past enrolled in classes to learn to do these things, with varying degrees of success. The life lesson from these classes has been that though most things may be easy to do, the real difficulty is in doing them well.
