Playing with Photos

Yellow flowers

One of the things on my to-do list for 2012 is to learn how to use Photoshop, so to set the ball in motion I downloaded Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Editor from the Apple app store. The quick peek I took at it has left me wondering how I am going to master the myriad transformational possibilities it offers. When I was downloading Photoshop  I also downloaded a couple of other much simpler photo apps. I am not for a nano second going to pretend I have any special photographic skills; I get by using my camera in a basic way. So this is neither a review nor a ‘how to’ post, merely a quick look at what the photographic and the tech challenged (that’s me) can do with a few apps.

Disconnected Days

The day before I headed to Cloona (for details of my stay there see the previous post) I read an article in the Irish Times by Pico Iyer, originally published in the New York Times as, ‘The Joy of Quite’, – (to read it click here )) which examined our plugged-in-infomation-overloaded-lives. He suggests that the future of travel may well lie in ‘black hole resorts’ where it will not be possible to go online and where there will be no televisions in the rooms.

Lost in Translation

Keep going it's grand poster

George Bernard Shaw described America and England as two countries separated by a common language. Perhaps because he was Irish he didn’t delve into the differences between English as spoken in Ireland and English as spoken in the rest of the Anglophone world. I was reminded of one of the differences when I saw the ‘KEEP GOING SURE IT’S GRAND’ poster in the Irish Design Shop before Christmas. Here in Ireland we pepper our everyday conservation with words or phrases that are probably incomprehensible to visitors to these shores. Here’s a small selection.

If Only

As I type this I am listening to Edith Piaf singing ‘Non, Je ne Regrette Rien’. It’s one of my favorive songs. I am not prone to major regrets but I do occasionally indulge in *if only* thinking.

Welcome to 2012

2012

It’s the first day of the New Year and incredibly we are already in the twelfth year of the twenty-first century. How did that happen? It feels like just six months or so have passed since we celebrated the millennium.

♥ Favourite Days

Vogue and a cup of tea

My favourite days of the year are the ones that immediately follow Christmas. There is no contest, no other day or days (for me) in the annual calendar holds or hold the same allure as the 26th and the 27th December. They are days for rest and relaxation. They are days when behaviour, that at other times of the year might appear lazy, such as taking cups of coffee or tea back to bed and spending an hour or so there poring over a magazine seems almost de rigueur. They are days when culinary treats, such as a large slice of Christmas cake heated in the oven and served with a giant dollop of cream, which might mark one as an eccentric eater outside the festive season seem perfectly normal edible fare. In short they are blissful, restful, and battery-recharging type days.

♥ Remembering to be Thankful

Lemons

My day seems to have revolved around drinking copious amount of lemon juice in hot water sweetened with honey and taking intermittent doses of Strepsils (proprietary medicine).   The reason: my throat is doing a very passable imitation of the roughest grade of sandpaper.

♥ This Week

Dried flowers

This week the countdown to Christmas continues and we are now just two weeks away from the day itself. The weather in these parts has been a degree or two chillier than before. But thankfully here has been almost daily winter sun although as time marches on  relentlessly towards the shortest day of the year it has only shone for a few short hours before descending beneath yonder hills.

♥ Alternative Christmas Gifts

Christmas window Paris

Today’s post was meant to be about something else but as is the way of the world I ended up devoting time that I had set aside for blog writing to something entirely different.  The hours sped by and all of a flash the planed post was toast.  Let me explain and bear with me while I veer off piste on a minor digression before I arrive at what I led you to expect when I typed this post’s title.

♥ Light up a Life

Yesterday, Sunday, I went with my mum to Our Lady’s Hospice in Dublin for the annual Light up a Life ceremony.  This remembrance ceremony has been held at the hospice every year, in early December, since 1992.  From small beginnings in the early nineties it has mushroomed into an event attended yesterday by about 5000 people.  Similar ceremonies are held at hospices all round the globe; because of the large numbers who attend it’s possible that the Dublin event is the largest Light up a Life gathering in the world.
