♥ Fashionable Effect

Fashion is a multi billion-dollar global industry, providing a mass of employment worldwide (designing, manufacturing and retailing).  There are of course countless ancillary jobs such as PR, journalism, shop-fitting; the list goes on and on.

I mentioned before that Michelle Obama is one of my style icons.  What she wears is much commented on.  Her fashion choices can send sartorial shares soaring and cause fashion websites to crash.  Last year a financial analyst from the Stern School of Business in New York concluded that the Michelle Obama effect was worth three billion dollars to the designers she wears, to read more, click here.

Mostly Mrs Obama wears American based designers and has been criticized when she has failed to do so on important occasions, notably when she wore a ball gown from the House of Alexander McQueen, to a state banquet at The White House, in honour of the Chinese premier earlier this year.

In the photograph above Michelle Obama is wearing a dress by Roksanda Ilinic and Samantha Cameron is wearing a design by Peter Pilotto.

Note; the picture is from the White House’s Flickr photstream and was taken when the two women met at Downing Street yesterday.
